Middlesex WFA County Cup

14 June 2026
The ref bites again!!

The Middlesex WFA County Cup is a very competitive tournament, as the winners in each age group then represent Middlesex WFA in the National FA Walking Football Tournament.

We entered a team in both the Over 50's and 60's but with various key players unavailable, notably a goalkeeper for the Over 50's.  However, the 50's won their first round game against Barnet with a goal from Pat Coregan and drew 1-1 in the second round against Bounds Green, Pete Cooper the scorer. In the third round Paul Bagley was available to play in goal which was previosuly covered by Mark Gunnel and made three great saves to draw 0-0 with Tottenham, the team we beat in last year's WFA National Cup Regional Semi-final. The final game was against Staines and a Paul Lowe goal was enough to seal a 1-1 draw and a place in the County Semi-final against Godalming, their National Cup Regional Semi-final opponents in a couple of weeks time at the Focus Community Arena.  The game was a hard fought game but another Paul Lowe strike sealed the win. The final was against Watford and it was, as expected a very tight game. Minutes into the 2nd half an overly officious referee had both teams on three 'not walking' offences. It was clear that the game would be decided by a fourth 'not walking' offence and unfotunately in the dying seconds we were penalised and lost from the resulting penalty 1-0. The final didn't really reflect how the game had been played throughout the tournament as the flow was continually being disrupted. The ref bites again!

Squad: Mark Gunnell, Matt Toms, Jim Holmes, Pete Cooper, Paul Lowe, Pat Coregan, Barry Crane.

The 60's drew their first round game 0-0 against Barnet and despite numerous chances they lost the second round match to Uxbridge 1-0 with their only shot of the game. The third round match was against Staines and a strike from Michael Cocomazzi was enough to seal the win. However, they missed out on a semi-final spot by just one point.  With the 60's now in the Plate Semi-final keeper Paul Bagley once again moved to the 50's for obvious reasons, which left the 60's without a keeper, which resulted in a 2-0 loss to London Irish.

Squad: Paul Bagley, Tony Towell, Mike Oakley, Mick Parkes, Dave Turner, Mark Mannell, Michael Cocomazzi.

So a great performance again from our Over 50's as Middlesex WFA County Cup Runners up. Next up Godalming in the WFA National Cup Regional Semi-final on Monday 29th June kick-off 8pm at the Focus Community Arena, Hemel Hempstead Town.
